Instagram post 2142358248594717218_2135256497 The Keep at Cardiff Castle. A wooden fortress was first built here in 1081 by the Normans. After conquering England they were invading Wales during this peroid. This stone keep was then built later in the 1130's. There was actually Roman fortifications on this site built around 55 CE to 80CE that lasted until the 4th century, but it was then abandoned until the Normans came along. I enjoyed visiting the Castle today with @bethofhyrule , there are alot of cool things to see here. #cardiff #history #castle #wales #visitwales #visitcardiff #instatravel #travelphotography
Instagram post 2108139802619862390_2135256497 To finish off the pics from me and @bethofhyrule 's visit to York here is a collection taken as we walked around the city. There are some great building's in York and many more I didn't get a photo of! The last one is the sign for the Ghost Walk we did on our last night. It's said to actually be the world's first Ghost Walk, having started around 1973. York is a apparantly a very haunted city, so there are many ghost walks operating now. But we went with the world's orginal as that is a pretty cool achievment to have. #york #visityork #ghostwalk #buildings
Instagram post 2107537529279748963_2135256497 When me and @bethofhyrule visited York over the last weekend we took a daytrip to Knaresborough. Found a great spot for lunch down by the River Nidd. #knaresborough #england #visitengland #travel #travelblogger #instatravel #travelgram #northyorkshire
Instagram post 2107424918215181969_2135256497 The Petrifying Well at Mother Shipton's Cave, Knaresborough. Said to be England's oldest charging 'visitor attraction' having been open to paying sightseers since 1630. The water 'petrifies' objects, making it look like they have turned to stone. Hence all the items hanging in the water. The nearby cave is said to be the birthplace of Mother Shipton. She lived between 1488 and 1561, apparantly making prophecies of which many have come true. So the legend tells!

Instagram post 2106021234168133916_2135256497 The Merchant Adventurers' Hall in York is one of the finest medieval buildings in England. Its construction began in 1357 and it belonged to a religious fraternity. Later on they became The Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York and they still own and run the building today. They used to be a merchant trading guild, trading from around 1430 onwards. They also used the building for religious worship and to care for the sick. Now although they no longer trade they still use the hall as a musuem and cafe, for hosting events and alike. Whilst it was intresting going around inside the hall and reading about it, for me it's exterior look is most impressive as ut really stands out as an 'old' medieval building.

Instagram post 2105347476918898041_2135256497 Cliffords Tower is a fantastic landmark to visit in York. It's the last major remaining part of York's Castle. Originally a fort was constructed here under the rule of William The Conquerer in 1068 to guard Nothern England against the external threat of Viking Invasion and the internal one of local rebellion. This is when the Earth Mound that the tower is upon was built.

In 1190 150 Jews were killed here. Local anti-semitism had been stirred up and they had sought shelter from an angry mob in the tower. Many of the Jews commited suicide rather than renouce their religion and the mob killed the rest, including torching the castle with them inside.

Construction of Clifford's Tower itself was begun in 1245 on the orders of King Henry III. Originally the Castle was built from wood and it was he who had it built in stone. Between 1298 and 1338 it was an important centre of administration for the whole of England which was reguarly at war with Scotland. During the English Civil War it was used by Royalists until it fell to the Parliamentary in 1644.
As well as serving a military purpose it has also been used as a prison over the years. These days its a great place to climb up and get panoramic views across the city.

Instagram post 2104642837311539583_2135256497 The ruins of St Mary's Abbey in York. There was originally a church here in 1055 dedicated to a Norewegian saint. In 1088 the church was refounded as a monastery and it became dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The stone walls were built in the 1260's. The monastery became one of the most powerfull in Notheen England. In the 1530's King Henry VIII enacted the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries' which really reduced the church's power and wealth. The abbey was closed in 1539 and these ruins are all that remain. These days it's in York's museum gardens and makes for a nice place to have a wander around and relax.

Instagram post 2104052849574372691_2135256497 Outside the York Minister (see my last post) is this statue of Constantine the Great. He was proclaimed Roman Emperor in York in 306CE after the death of his father. At that point the empire was split but over the years defeated his rivals to become sole ruler and reigned until 337CE. Its a good reminder of the Roman s legacy in England. York was actually founded by them as Eboracum in 71CE and played an important role in Northern England's history since.
